Chapter Three: Observations

A Continuation of The Village

Still in my little white car and too petrified to get out, I observed my surroundings. A few metres away a few boys were splashing about happily at a riverbank. The land was covered in greyish hardened soil and the air was musty. A few pillars of wild grass sprouted from the ground in sparse numbers. Other than that, there was no sign of other life form.

The village was set on a connection of rivers, perhaps three or four. The houses were built around the rivers; it looked like each river belonged to a small close-knit community, each with their own traditions and beliefs. Outside one house hung a netted bag of bones. Another house had a bundle of dry grass neatly tied and intentionally left hanging from the main door. Each wooden house was connected by a few planks of wood which probably served as a balustrade of some kind.

The only way to get around the village was via the wooden balustrades.

From the way they dressed I could tell this village was a little shy of civilization. Either that, or they really had a special dresscode: Every person I observed wore a tattered t-shirt and a pair of faded cotton shorts. Shoes were not part of the outfit, neither were accessories or tidyness. I felt overdressed, and overblessed. The red Target top I was wearing and have been wearing for the past half a decade felt like luxury. Just having able to sit in a car made me feel like royalty.

The stick-like boys continued to play where I last saw them and something softened my heart a little. I felt for these people. I could almost smell the desparation in the air as I wound down the driver's seat window.

to be continued...
