Chapter Seven: The Letter

A continuation of Chapter Six: A Past Relived

No. This can't be. It can't be right!

I picked up the faced-down letter, hands trembling with fear and disappointment. There was nothing else left in the house and I secretly wished the letter was for me, at least something could wake me from this dream - or even better, tell me it was all just a nightmare. Tomorrow we would be best friends again, I would be bus-ing to her mansion, we would go dancing and we would have crepes on Sundays. Someone please wake me up!

Sometimes eyes play tricks on you when you're not looking.

Alone on the mantelpiece was a butterfly framed photo of us. I recalled the day the photo was taken- it was her fifteenth birthday and in her books, it was the legal age for booze. After all you can only be fifteen once and once you turn sixteen, it may all go downhill from there. You never know where you'd end up. Well that was her idea of things anyway. I couldn't disagree more! We were'nt all that identical when it came to philosophies of life, in fact we were the opposite. I would look out for her when things went out of hand. She loved to party and somehow attracted trouble like a fly to your face in summer.

We were tipsy when she snapped that picture but it was a photo she treasured. I didn't know why, but everyone has their favourites.

The remains of the pink letter was for me. I wished now it wasn't.

"Dear M,
I am writing to you in..."

No! This is wrong! I didn't want to read on. I didn't want to know answers I so desperately needed. What did it read?

..."don't try to call me or find me. I will be far away from you and we will never see each other again. I wanted to tell you..."

Tell me what?

It was only half-written? I didn't know what to think. It was clearly her writing and it was smudged by what looked like drops of water.

So much for a letter, L!

Six years had passed since the empty discovery on that fateful spring morning...
