"Where is a moment we needed the most? You kick up the leaves and the magic is lo-st, You tell me your blue skies fade to grey, They tell me your passions gone a-way, And I don't need..."
I fumbled as I reached for my phone.
"Oh! Hello? Hello?! Really? What time is it? Crap! Eleven? Are you sure? Okay...sure. Alright! I'll meet you guys there,"
How could I have not heard my phone alarm ring ? It was unusual for an extra-light sleeper like me to not have had the slightest idea my 7am alarm had gone off four hours ago.
I jumped out of bed and quickly got dressed to go out. My then boyfriend had called, wondering where I was. We were supposed to bring his extended family around town for a day. After all, they had endured hours of claustrophobia, dry throats and overcooked vegetables just to arrive safely in town and spend some time quality with us. It was the perfect opportunity to meet them for the first time, you know what they say- first impression matters the most.
"Don't worry, they're not ready yet. So we'll just meet you at Percy's Place up East in an hour?" were his exact words as I remembered.
Some sort of relief blanketed my fluttering anxious soul. The cloud of thought of them getting all restless from waiting for me for hours vanished in an instant. Phew! At least I still had the opportunity to prove myself with the whole good first impression thing. However, I could not help but fret over the distance I had to travel to get to the esteemed Award-Winning Italian Lunch Bar. I lived thirty minutes from his place and it would take an hour at the very least to reach Percy's Place.
"Well if that's what it takes, it's just what it takes," I tried to console myself. It worked, because I felt much better.
Ten minutes later I got into my car and started the eminent drive. It was the fastest I had ever seen myself get ready since primary school, and it made me feel like I had won a marathon- proving that girls don't need half a day to get ready to go out!
My little white car shook as larger, steadier cars zoomed past. The highway was 80km/h and it was pretty busy for a Saturday morning. Not bad, I thought. We're nearly there and I haven't panicked since we set out! Am I good or what?
"Where is the moment we needed the mo-st? You kick up the leaves and the magic is lo-st, You tell me..."
"Uh...yes? Hello..yeah...WhATT!!"
It was him again. They decided against travelling East as they unanimously agreed to scout the city instead.
"But...but..I'm almost there! And...and...I've been driving for the past 45minutes!"
I knew it wasn't worth debating as the decision had been made. Who am I to have a say in it anyway? It was 20 versus 1 person. No amount of whingeing could change the facts. I had to turn back.
to be continued...
