Like Hey Diddle Diddle, Pussycat pussycat, Jack and Jill, Rock a bye baby...
Ever wondered what they really mean and where they originated from?
I did some reading and found this many controversial opinions on how the rhymes first came about. However I don't necessarily believe them as there is no evidence on the internet...
London Bridge
Some have related it to the destruction of London Bridge in 1014 by Olaf II of Norway.
Others have speculated that it relates to the burying of live children in the foundations of the bridge!
Rock a bye baby

Enough said! I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
Mary Mary quite contrary
Mary, Mary, quite contrary,
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells, and cockle shells,
And pretty maids all in a row
There are several religious interpretations, I can't really be bothered to type them all out.
My most favourite children's stories of all time are/is Aesop's fables. The guy's a genius.
Read and find out why!

Another genius is Charles Dickens. I didn't know he was mostly self-educated!
Having said all that, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to stop my children from nursery rhymes. There are much more disturbing games out there these days especially ones on the computer that are dedicated to killing innocent bystanders (I won't mention what the game is called). And I guess there has never been reports of crime due to nursery rhymes.
