Read Chapter Nine first!
" What do you mean it all changed when she turned fifteen? What happened?" I remembered that tipsy night at the club where her favourite picture was taken.
" She was friends with you because she wanted to know what it was like to lead a real, normal life. To her, your life was perfect, I know you didn't think so because you weren't 'well off' like we were, but L seemed to think you had everything. You meant the world to her. As she grew older, admiration became jealousy. She was jealous of you and wanted to pull you down with her. She had plans, that girl. Of course, we stopped it before anything could really happen.
And you know why she loved that drunken photo so much? She said it showed that perfect people like you could be as vulnerable as her just with a few sips of alcohol. It made her greater than you, it made her feel good. She always thought people like her were condemned and relied on medication to appear normal, but loved the idea that perfect people like you wanted to be condemned under the influence of a substance (alcohol). Get what I mean? It meant that people like you wanted to actually, become people like her. It's reverse ,"
My eyes were getting to the verge of closing from puffiness now. I didn't want to know anymore. I felt betrayed, stood up, whatever you call it.
"So I suggest you leave through the back doors, forget it all ever happened and continue on with your life. No use crying over spilt milk! And don't tell anyone you know about us or I promise, you will have a difficult life. Mark my words! Now go!"
"Mr T?"
"I said go!"
"Just one question."
"Ok! What is it now?"
"Was she ever a real friend? All those years and girly fun- should I believe in them?"
"You can only believe in what you believe in. Now go!"
I am sorry, L. I did believe in you and those years growing up were the best times of my life. I sometimes wish it had a happier ending, but I couldn't have been happier without your company. I know you can't help it, and I will always miss you. All the best and I hope one day, we will meet again.
I forgive you and I promise I won't booze ever again.
Love always,
M
